Description
In the shade under the trees is the perfect place for a picnic. Rolling hills of harvested wheat give a sense of peace, quiet, and a successful end to the farming year.
The artwork, August, celebrates those warm, lazy days of summer, which in many ways, aren’t so lazy after all! For those who live in agricultural lands, especially those growing wheat, August is a time of harvest which began in July. The sights and sounds of the harvesters are everywhere, and days are long as workers get the fields mown before the thunderstorms and rains that unexpectedly occur.
After the harvest, the fields have a mown, park-like look, except for the color! The constant heat of long summer days turns spring wheat into summer’s harvest, and after the harvesting is done, only the straw remains.
For the hiker and picnicker, a gentle knoll above the meadow is the perfect place to stop, protected by the tree’s shade. With harvest over, the only sound is that of the insects buzzing in the heat, and an occasional bird song.
Such is life in the country – a place where there is hard work interspersed with times of rest and relaxation. In the country, as well, one is more aware of the seasons, because one sees the food that grows, when it grows. Spring’s blossoms ripen into summer’s growth, followed by the harvest in late summer or fall. And when it’s all over, winter sets in.
It’s easy to forget this cycle of the seasons when we limit our lives to getting into the car, driving to the office, and driving back. And though we may be aware of the heat, or the rain, or the wind, or the snow, it is in the country that we see the color of the fields and glory in the changing panorama of the sky.
August is featured in 28 Fine Art America groups.
