Description
It is early, early morning.
Few people are up and about, and itβs easy to find a spot to yourself, all to yourself. Even though you are at the Grand Canyon, AZ, a popular tourist destination visited by nearly 5 million people a year, there are places, spaces, where you can be alone.
The tourist buses havenβt arrived yet, disgorging their crowds of sightseers. Early hikers are intent on the hike, speaking in hushed tones as they walk by, their footsteps crunching in the gravel. A lot of people are still asleep, in their tents or at the resort.
So for now, the canyon is yours.
You find a spot where you can sit, a good sized rock against which you can lean, and wrap your jacket close. Although it will be warm, even hot, later in the day, it is certainly not so now. The cool desert air is biting, and you give a little shiver. At your side is a thermos of coffee that you wisely brought along, and as you sip the warming, aromatic brew, you look out into a timeless vista that has not changed, does not change.
But . . . in a way it does change, constantly and fluidly. The colors of the canyon shift and adapt, transform and fluctuate with the light that glances across its surface. In the distance, in the shadows, the landscape is a rich royal blue, almost purple, while just above, across the tops of the cliffs, the emerging sunlight brings out corals and peaches, light pinks and gentle oranges.
The artwork, A Grand Morning View, invites you to start your morning slowly, easily, gently in this beautiful, majestic place, to sip your coffee, to let your eyes drift far, far down to the Colorado River flowing like a ribbon through the landscape.
Take a break, before the day even begins, to take this break.
