Description
A road less traveled leads to a destination of adventure.
After an Autumn Rain, the artwork, invites the viewer to embark on such an adventure, taking a winding, rustic road in the country that wends its way through and around fields, meadows, trees, and bushes.
One does not travel quickly on such a road – whether one is in a vehicle or walking on foot – but the point is not to move quickly, because the destination isn’t the object. After an Autumn Rain takes the viewer into a place of quiet and peace, of tranquility and thought, of beauty and country charm.
Because it has just rained, the surface of the road is dark and wet, and the leaves clinging to the trees – though still bright orange and red and crimson and gold – are dampened by the weather, and ready to drop from the branches onto the ground below. The air is silent but bright, with that freshness that comes only after a rain. The world is renewed – though it is autumn – and the recent rain has cleansed and refreshed the landscape.
Where does this road go? It could be anywhere, but in the distance we see the foothills of the mountains, and we know that we are going to climb somewhere – eventually, maybe quite steeply. Because we are far from the town and its outlying houses, we enter into an area of isolation and wilderness, an area in which, though there may still be cultivated fields, they become less and less as the road winds higher.
Best of all, in an area as isolated as this, the cell phone probably doesn’t get any reception, so there is no temptation at all to look away from the road and onto the screen. The landscape is the thing, and it is worth allowing our senses to absorb every element of beauty it possesses.
(After an Autumn Rain captures a rural road in Columbia County, Washington, USA.)
