Description
It’s the simple things in life that matter.
We’ve all heard that; many of us have said it on multiple occasions; and we even think that we believe it. After all, the words are wise, a counteraction to the high stress, high anxiety, materialistic outlook that shapes the American culture. Increasingly, this attitude shapes other cultures as well, as we export our lifestyle, our movies, our advertising all the way around the world to places who have never asked for our interference.
But it really is the simple things that matter, and so distanced are we from this view that we have to stop and consciously think about it to incorporate it into our life.
Afternoon with a Book, the artwork, embodies the wisdom of simplicity, as a young woman is contentedly absorbed in her reading. Her attitude is relaxed, her eyes gently yet with concentration run over the words on the page. At some point, we think, she will put the book down, close her eyes, and meditate upon what she has just read. We can feel this, because many of us have actually done it – on a Sunday afternoon, say, when we “allow” ourselves a moment to not be constantly doing something we consider more useful.
This is simple living. It is not quick; it does not turn a major profit; it is most certainly not something that one sees on a reality TV show because, frankly, who wants to spend their afternoon watching on screen a person reading a book? So much better to watch a distraught, hysterical woman throwing a book.
Afternoon with a Book invites the viewer to join the young woman in her quiet, pleasant (it’s best not to use the term “lazy” as this denigrates the whole activity) afternoon of reading a favorite, timeless classic.
