Description
Like the goddess of the Greeks, a young woman arises from the foam and surf of the sea. Freedom and joy reign.
Aphrodite, the artwork, invites us to step into the surf of the sea, to literally get our feet wet, and to put aside for a moment all of the reluctance to relax and be ourselves.
The young woman in Aphrodite is focused on the surf at her feet, at the sound of the waves, at the warm sunlight on her shoulders. With confidence and grace, she steps forth toward the beach, playfully watching her toes sink into the sand.
Both the dress and the fabric she holds are glowing aqua, matching the warm blue tones of the sea – and in many ways, the woman in Aphrodite is a part of her environment, a part of the sea, much as was the ancient Greek goddess Aphrodite, who was said to rise from the sea.
And while we may not be ancient Greek goddesses, we are, all of us, incredibly beautiful and complex human beings made by a Creator who cares about every one of His children, as well as about the earth on which He has placed us. There is much beauty and joy here, but so often, we as humans relegate ourselves and our lives to tiny gray places – office cubicles and parking lots – slogging our way through each day as we check off, mentally or actually, the endless items on our list.
Aphrodite, the artwork, encourages us to see more, to live more, in our lives – like Aphrodite, to release our many inhibitions and fully engage in our environment. Instead of worrying about getting a crease in our wool suits, it’s time to step boldly into the sea and feel the water swirling around our calves and ankles.
