Description
It is one of those cool autumn days.
You know the kind – in the sunlight, it’s warm, and when you close your eyes you think it’s still summer. But when you step into the shade, you are quickly reminded that the earth has tilted just enough to change the angle of the sun, the amount of light in each day.
Summer is over, and fall is bustling in.
Down here by the quiet, peaceful stream, the shade takes over. As we sit on the green banks and look out at the sun-kissed hills, we see the difference between light and shadow, green growth and sere hillsides, summer and fall.
In our minds we progress through time, as if we were watching a movie (but this is real, about real places and real life, something worth seeing and appreciating). In a few weeks, the remaining leaves will fall; the frost will breathe lightly on the branches; then the snow will come and blanket the landscape. The earth will continue turning, the days will grow shorter until the shortest day arrives, and then it will be time to look toward spring.
Here in this peaceful Autumn Enclave, though time goes on, it also seems to stop. There is no hurry here, no rush, no frenzy to work through a list, finish a project, buy the latest trendy product theoretically created by a genius 10-year-old entrepreneur. There is no phone unless we bring it (don’t, please), and no TV/radio voices babble and chatter and chitter and issue dire warnings about the sky falling and aliens landing or whatever else the “news” proclaims that day.
The only babble is that of the creek. Any chittering comes from insects. A few birds, hidden in the trees, warble. Other than that, there is silence.
And peace. Oh . . . sweet peace.
