Description
One of the most unique and pleasant sounds is that of swishing autumn leaves.
Not the wet, soggy leaves that stick to our boots and shoes, but rather, the dry, crispy, colorful leaves that cascade from the trees and form a carpet of irresistibly fluffy joy at our feet.
Do you remember, as a child, sweeping your feet through one of these piles and listening to that most satisfying crackle and swish?
Better yet, are your memories more recent, and you have done so, not so long ago, as an adult?
It’s hard to kick through a pile of leaves without feeling, somehow, that we are doing something contrary and insubordinate, a wilful and fractious naughtiness in spoiling a nice, neat, tidy pile. Ah, but what a delightful wilful, fractious disobedience, and one that causes no harm if we restore, if necessary, the leaves to their original order so that we do not undo someone’s hard work.
And if those leaves are naturally there, as they are in the landscape of the painting, Autumn Pathway, then there is no harm at all in swishing through, disrupting the pile, scattering the leaves to land where they may. It’s all part of a fall walk through the countryside, wandering through copses of woods and trees, picking out trails that the animals have created under the branches.
The deep, blue autumn sky contrasts beautifully with the orange and red, the gold and yellow, the rust and coral and beige and brown of the leaves still on the trees, and those on the ground. In the sunlight, it is delightfully warm, something we realize when we pass into the shade under the branches and feel the coolness of its surrounding shadows.
In short, it is an incandescent day, in a perfect place, and the swish of our feet through the leaves adds that just-right sound to the surrounding silence.
(Autumn Pathway is a country trail through the fields and meadows of Columbia County, in Eastern Washington. The specific area is called Baileysburg.)
