Description
An afternoon on the waters is one of peace, silence, and beauty as a lone sailboat wends its way through the waters of the Puget Sound, near Seattle in Washington State.
The autumn colors are out and the trees are in full blaze of orange, rust, red, burgundy, and gold, adding to the beauty of the sailing through the sound. It is quiet on the boat, the major activity on the water that of the state ferries that regularly pass through this channel, on their way to the islands of Puget Sound, and back to the docks of Seattle.
Lights from the island homes are just beginning to turn on, as late afternoon segues into evening’s twilight, and the sailor knows that it will be time soon to head to harbor and dock for the night. But there is no hurry – there is time to simply glide through the water and listen to the gentle lapping of the waves against the boat, the occasional sound of the gull overhead, the veriest sound as the wind flaps through the sails.
Bainbridge Island Sail, the artwork, invites the viewer to step into this quiet place and time, to be away from it all even as we are in the midst of the city. It’s different, gliding past the life and movement, watching it from afar, and yet being a part of it on the boat itself – moving purposefully yet gently from one task to the next.
We need times like this – times in which we are doing things, but not in a hurry, not under a deadline, not for somebody else – times in which we have no specific timeline, no relentless schedule, no demands to sit before the computer screen and wrestle with data.
Enter into the world of Bainbridge Island Sail and do nothing but glide through the water, on your way to . . . does it really matter, where?
