Description

It is evening at the south rim of the Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona, USA.

The sun is low, casting its shadows across the majestic cliffs of this famous Southwest landscape, causing the colors of the rocks and cliffs to shift and change.

Here and there, the golden light of the sun hits the rocks, emphasizing their layers and texture. In the foreground, we see a stack of rocks, neatly placed as if by design.

“Did a child of the giant world play here?” we wonder, allowing our minds to soar into a brief flight of fancy.

This is the world of Balancing Act, a world of silence and color and splendor and rugged beauty. From our perch at the rim, we look down, down into the canyon, down into the shadows where sunset’s last light illuminates the cliffs across from us. In the deep shadows, we catch a glimpse of the Colorado River.

There are pinks and purples, corals and lavenders, cool, rich colors that we don’t expect to find in red rock country.

But the world of the wilderness is unexpected. It is not a tame world, not a shopping mall or grocery store. It is a world of vast, majestic proportions – a world so big that it puts into perspective the worries and anxieties that threaten to overwhelm us when we stay too long in a room with four walls.

Still, silent, timeless, the world of Balancing Act will remain although we leave. Our vacation over, we head back to our home and office, our work day and free time, our day to day routine. There is a comfort in knowing that, when the day seems stressful and threatening to overwhelm us with details and small things, the Grand Canyon remains strong and impassive, big and bold and grand.

When we step into the world of Balancing Act, we step into a place of peace.
