Description
Palouse Falls – it is described as the artist’s and photographer’s dream, simply because it is a landscape so unique, so unusual, that it is nature’s work of art.
Located in Eastern Washington of the United States, Palouse Falls is located at the end of a bumpy, unkempt road that leads the traveler to wonder, “This can’t be much of a waterfall if this is the best road that they can make to it.”
But upon arriving and getting out of the car, the first thing the traveler hears is the roar of the falls. Especially in the springtime, when the winter runoff takes place, the amount of water surging over the cliffs is massive, forming a deep, brooding pool below.
Within the park, there are several views one can see of the falls, the most familiar being that of the straight-on waterfall. Below Palouse Falls, the artwork, takes the viewer to a different location – slightly below the falls, which one can just see in the back right of the painting.
The quiet, almost still water of the river in the foreground belies the sheer energy and majesty of the falls themselves, and the spray rising up from the mist gives the viewer an idea of just how big and powerful Palouse Falls is.
It is also timeless. Because, as an isolated state park, the area has been kept free of development, one can wander the paths of the park and banks of the river and imagine how it was 150 years ago, when the Indians lived in this area and had no idea that in a short time they would be chased from it.
Embraced by the cliffs, the viewer entering Below Palouse Falls feels the sense of dramatic isolation, and marvels at the incredible, unique beauty of this amazing landscape.
