Description
In the hands of a child, a leaf is many things.
It can be an umbrella, protecting its holder from the fiery rains of planet Venus. Or it can be a balloon, flying over a mountainous landscape filled with enormous castles before rising further up, up, up into the clouds. Or it can be a leaf – but not just any leaf, but rather a leaf of magical properties that grants three-and-a-half wishes to its holder, as long as it is held a certain way.
In the hands of a child, the mind of a child, the world is a magical, mystical place of possibilities and improbabilities. It is a place where imagination dances, grabbing the child by the hand and running with him through the woods – laughing, wondering, discovering.
The artwork, Boy in the Rhubarb Patch, invites the viewer to step into the deep, hushed greenery of giant rhubarb leaves, growing in the midst of a forest. Sunlight dappling through the trees brushes across the leaves, adding a golden glow to the green. A boy stands in the midst of them, having just plucked a leaf from the ground. He leans back, back, as he gazes upward, a slight smile playing across his face as he imagines . . . what?
We don’t know, because his thoughts are deep in the mind of the boy. But we can remember, can’t we, what it felt like to be a boy, a girl, playing outside and pretending, absorbing ourselves in the story we were making up? It can’t be so long ago that we’ve forgotten, and if the intervening years are too filled with memories of office meetings and utility bills, of fear-mongering news shows and political pontificating, then it’s time to find that rhubarb path, pick a giant leaf, look at it closely, and see what we can make it be.
