Description
Privacy, like freedom, is of such inestimable value that we can’t put a price, or even a label upon it.
It’s not a jewel, because jewels are simply hard, glittery pieces of rock.
Neither is it a gift, something that can be given to some and not to others, and wantonly grabbed back by the giver.
The artwork, Butterflies, is a visual expression of privacy – its beauty, fragility, value, necessity, and power. The woman in the artwork is enjoying a moment of freedom and joy, alone in one of the few locations that is still allotted a modicum of privacy: the bathroom. It is in her home, another place that should be completely and totally free from prying eyes and listening ears. Should. Be.
Behind an ornamental screen, the woman safely disrobes, stretches, relaxes. Her outer physical freedom is a representation of something deeper, wilder, more intense: our inner being, the depths of our soul, the hidden essence inside that forms who we are as a unique, distinctive, precious person.
Like a baby in a womb, our thoughts reside in a hidden, private place, and, like a baby in a womb, they should be safe there.
What we do, how we think, what makes us happy and sad – these are all private matters (so, also, are our shopping habits, eating choices, medical history and conversations with others, among many others). And while some people blurt out,
“Oh, it doesn’t matter if people know stuff about me. I have nothing to hide!”
that’s not the issue. The essence of who we are is something very personal indeed, and should remain so.
Like the woman, free people stand with grace and ease, gazing off into the distance as we repose ourselves in deep thought. In the hidden, silent, private places, we are free to think, dream, wonder, question, imagine and simply be.
