Description
This is one lake where you probably won’t ever find a motorboat cutting through the water.
High in the alpine mountain wilderness of the Seven Devils of Idaho, USA, Cannon Lake takes some hiking to get to. And that’s after driving slowly along a one-lane, dirt road to reach the base campground from which to start.
One of a series of lakes in the area, Cannon Lake is a place of quiet and refuge, a silent, hidden body of water that invites the hiker and the viewer to take things slowly, listen to the silence, allow one’s eyes to travel across the clear, still surface to the other side.
Some people, accustomed to the constant, incessant, unending sounds of the city – the traffic, the sirens, the hum of movement – are reluctant, almost afraid to embrace the silence.
“It forces me to think,” they say. “I’d rather have the TV in the background, or music playing, or even a podcast that I’m not interested in, rather than straight up quiet.”
But of all things to fear in this world – and those who watch a lot of TV, follow the news, believe the Influencers, or are addicted to podcasts, find a lot to fear – silence is not one of them. In the quiet, in the absence of distractions, we are able to process all the noise and information and factoids and dire predictions and put them into perspective.
As we sit at the banks of the lake and look for signs of mountain goats on the cliffs opposite, we are able to ask ourselves, “Am I being told the truth?” without voices shrilling at us, “This is the truth! Believe it! Only an idiot asks questions! Your job is to fear, fear, fear!”
Not here. Not in the peace and the calm, the normalcy of nature, the timelessness of the mountains. Here, we reflect on what it means to be human, and free.
