Description
There are all kinds of beaches – from tropical ones with sand as white and fine as processed sugar to ones covered with boulders so grand that you feel as if you are rock climbing just to get across them.
And then there are the ones with a little bit of everything: fine sand interspersed with rocks, the perfect place to explore tide pools as well as contemplatively stroll.
This is the beach in the artwork, Coastal Wilderness. Tucked in an enclave along the Oregon Coast in the western U.S., the beach is a place of discovery – not only of the ocean, which is a pretty difficult thing to miss on the Oregon Coast, but sea treasures hidden amongst the rocks, driftwood, and the dense grove of trees and bushes that cling tenaciously to the hills and cliffs.
This is one of those hidden spots, a small beach that doesn’t have a prominent sign on the highway announcing its existence, and for that reason, is all the more worth looking for and finding – simply because a lot of people won’t be crowding around here.
You feel as if you have the place to yourself --almost as if you are the first one to discover it -- and are not worried about people nearby overhearing what you say, as you call out to your companions, “Look at what I found under this rock here!” or, “Isn’t it amazing how the trees grow so on such a steep hillside? Imagine what it would be like if they weren’t there!”
You climb, scramble, scrabble, leap, stand, listen, explore, and survey a rugged landscape, one that never stays the same because the sea (which is just hidden behind the boulder at the central right of the image) rushes in at high tides and during storms, and plays with the rocks and driftwood, sand and beach.
What a grand and beautiful place. And you are in it.

I couldn't imagine this scene to be any more beautiful in person as it is in this stunning work
Steve Henderson replied:
Thank you, Jim. Although there is nothing like "being there" I did try to convey the overall sense of mystery, wonder that I feel when I am there.
