Description
It’s impossible to say this too much: get off the beaten path.
Leave the crowds.
Find the places other people miss.
Walk your own path. And don’t be concerned if you’re the only one on it.
This advice works in both a literal and metaphorical sense. Literal, because when you go to a popular spot where 4.5 million other people go each year – like Zion National Park in Utah – you’ll have a hard time experiencing the sense of awe and majesty such a landscape inspires when you’re surrounded by crowds and mobs and bunches of people. And while all 4.5 million aren’t there at once, when you go on an extremely popular trail like Angel’s Landing, you don’t want to be bumped and jostled and pushed on a narrow trail – intended for far fewer people – with a sheer drop-off on either side.
But . . . if, on the way to Angel’s Landing, you walk past the turn-off to your right and keep going, you’ll quickly find yourself, well, alone. And as you keep walking, you’ll be on a challenging trail that winds and wends its way upward and around until you stop and look DOWN on Angel’s Landing, and feel extremely grateful that you’re not one of many in a line of people.
You’re in a beautiful place. And you’re able to enjoy it.
That’s the literal interpretation. The metaphorical interpretation is similar, only the journey you’re taking is on the path of life. Millions, billions of people are on this same path, and if you insist upon walking on the crowded highway, stuffed with others all walking the same way, doing the same things, you’ll have a hard time experiencing the sense of awe and majesty that life itself inspires.
Everything you do will look like what everyone else is doing.
But . . . if you turn off the path to a small, narrow, undiscovered one, you won’t be doing what everyone else is doing.
You’ll be doing what you’re doing.
