Description
It’s the type of place you miss.
Which is unfortunate, because it is the type of place that is worth discovering.
Colors of Colorado celebrates a wild, open landscape at the Droney Gulch State Wilderness area in central Colorado, near Salida. It is accessed by a forgotten little highway stop-off, one consisting of a picnic table or two, as if the state planners themselves figured nobody would ever stop there.
The view looks Northeast toward Cameron Mountain and Jack Rabbit Hill, far in the distance. A little path in the right foreground of the painting invites pedestrians to stroll through the landscape, feel the cool alpine breeze brush through their hair, walk away from the busy highway noise filled with people who are heading to the more expected, traditional, and overcrowded tourist spots in a state that has astonishing landscape after astonishing landscape.
But as with any tourist attraction, many of those astonishing landscapes are filled with, well, tourists, the sheer number of which detracts from the sense of wildness, wilderness, pristine and untamed beauty. As in life itself, it’s when you’re willing to pull away from the crowd that you find things that the crowd would flock to if only it were told to do so.
Because That’s. What. We. Do.
We do what we’re told. We go where the guidebooks, the TV shows, the state tourist offices, the Chambers of Commerce, tell us to go, and in limiting ourselves to the expected thing, the expected places, we do not discover the unusual thing, the unusual places.
Our journey, and our lives, begin to look like copies of others, rather than like journeys and lives unique to who and what we are.
Stop the car. Sit on one of the picnic tables for a minute to take in the view. Then take the path – the path that few take – into a place worth being.
