Description
The ocean is an astonishing place.
It’s not just the vast quantity of water, filling the space in front of us, reaching out to the horizon and disappearing beyond sight. Nor is it the timelessness, the permanence, the depth and breadth and vastness, although these are all indeed astonishing.
It is the sheer power of water, constantly moving and shifting with the tides. And where we see this at its most dramatic is over and around the rocks as the water rushes in, lands with a mighty crash, then quickly recedes, inexorably drawing with it anything that floats free. The spray from the impact shoots into the air, the swirling of movement results in foam that merrily eddies and twirls.
Every wave is different.
The artwork, Cook’s Chasm, captures a moment in which one wave has just hit, finishing out its performance as another enters the stage. The receding of the first wave cascades over the surface of the rocks like frosting on a freshly made cinnamon roll, and the rocks, while they are fascinating to look at, are places we would most definitely not want to be right now.
Located on the Oregon Coast in the United States, Cook’s Chasm is a rugged yet pleasant site just off the highway. Winding asphalt paths take the visitor gently down to where they can view the chasm and all its noise and activity, then deposits him or her on a bed of rocks that lead to Thor’s Well, a gaping, seemingly bottomless sinkhole that captures the waves and swallows the water down its steep sides.
Even at low tide, the show at Cook’s Chasm is well worth seeing, and at high tide, it is something you don’t want to miss; often, it’s difficult to know where to look, because each spot along the rocks has something new and different to display.
“Astonishing” is an apt word indeed to describe what we see.
