Description
In the shadows, the air feels cool. But in the sunlight, it’s warm and glorious. The combination makes a perfect autumn day, one on which to take a walk – brisk or leisurely – along a quiet country road.
There’s something about country roads that do, indeed, take us home – whether or not we’ve ever lived in the country. For those who do, we know the sense of quiet and calm, of peace and tranquility in an area where “not a lot of stuff happens.”
For those who have never lived in the country, who have always been surrounded by skyscrapers and city streets, by parking lots and teeming people, the country may seem like a strange, foreign place, but there is an allure to its calmness, the very openness of its landscape.
Here, one finds areas where we can walk freely, unencumbered by parking meters and gates, unmolested by building attendants who want to know who we are, why we’re there, when we’re moving on. Nobody stares at us because nobody’s around. We have the land and the road and the day to ourselves.
How grand! How free and open it all feels!
Davis Hollow Country Road, the artwork, takes us to this place of serenity and solitude. Though most people drive upon it, others enjoy the walk. Located in Columbia County near Dayton, WA, the road winds and wends its way upward into the hills of Blue Mountain Country.
Autumn is the perfect time to be on this road, because the trees that surround it on both sides showcase their splendor in a blaze of color. Like a portico, they arch their way over the roadway, adding an extra sense of magical to an already beautiful scene.
In a place where “not a lot of stuff happens,” there is much to see, to absorb, to wonder over, to enjoy.
Step onto the road and walk into a place of beauty.
