Description
Listen to the trees, speaking.
And while it is true that trees don’t utter words in the way a human does, they do speak – in much the same way that animals speak with their eyes, or a person’s face speaks through its expression. Some of the strongest communication comes through silence.
And that is how trees speak. Standing tall and gracious, still and strong, they give the idea that they have seen many things in the many years that they have been growing. A gentle wisdom emanates from their being, a wisdom that invites, almost compels us to stop what we are doing and stand still, silent, graceful ourselves as we enter into a state of deep, contemplative thought.
How different this is from the speaking – nattering, really – of the newscaster on TV, the jabber of the talk show host, the droning of the politician. Their speech, their harangue, does not allow us time for reflection, thought, contemplation, but then again, it is designed to push and persuade, to foment anxiety and fear, to intimidate, coerce, and subdue.
But when the trees speak, they command, through quiet dignity, silence, and in that silence our own thoughts move freely and expressively, allowing us to explore and wonder, question and imagine. When the trees speak, they are actually inviting us to speak within ourselves – to think.
The artwork, Elevated Hues, invites us into a wilderness meadow. Sunlight warms us as we walk through the grass, and here and there throughout the meadow, encircling us as we stroll, are the trees. Some grow together closely; others stand alone. They are varying sizes and types; the green of one is deep and rich, while others are almost olive colored. Each is unique.
As our gaze moves from one to the other, gently resting upon the branches swaying in the breeze, or motionless in the stillness, our soul gives an almost sigh of relief at the sense of peace, of tranquility, of deep, deep calm.
That is a message worth hearing.
