Description
It is evening in the Grand Canyon in Arizona, USA.
As the sun descends into the horizon, its light is blocked by canyon walls. The shadows of the depths appear to rise up to meet glowing gold, dancing across the tops of the rocks.
Color on the rocks shift and change, ranging from the warm golds and yellows and reds of the sunlit areas, to deep purple and blue hues of shadow. Moment by moment the panorama looks different, as the distinctive layers of the Grand Canyon adjust to the day’s fading light.
This is a time of intense quietness. Perhaps an occasional bird will chirp but they, like we, realize that this is the end of the day, a time to close up all our activity and prepare to rest. It is enough to simply be still, watchful, aware, drinking in the moments as they so quickly pass.
The artwork, Evening Light in the Grand Canyon, invites the viewer to step to the edge of the canyon and look out at the majestic cliffs. Clouds in the sky overhead paint their own vista from a palette that, like the colors on the rocks, changes with the light.
There is no place we need to be but here. There are no tasks to which we need to attend but to stand and observe. When we leave – as we all must, because we cannot stay in one place forever no matter how beautiful that place may be – the canyon will remain, as it has for so many ages.
Though we are not there to see it, the sun will make its progression from dawn to dusk, will play across the canyon’s surface and create its dance of hues across the color spectrum. The Grand Canyon speaks its beauty through time, and forms a literal bedrock upon which we can stand.
(The original oil painting of Evening Light at the Grand Canyon is 4 inches high by 12 inches wide. Larger images of the work will show the detail of the brush strokes and paint texture, as well as glints of white -- specks -- that reflect the light off the paint. These are all an integral parts of the image.)
