Description
Evening is the time of stopping our labors, of winding down, of resting and leaving the hustle and busy-ness of the day behind.
Or it should be. Unfortunately, in “modern” life, evening finds too many people in loud, noisy, brightly lit places, unable to get away from the stress and pressure. For those who must work at night, one hopes they find their “evening” at a different time of the day, but all of us need that space and place of silence and winding down.
The artwork, Evening on the Patit, invites the viewer to step out of where they are into the quiet, tranquil world of the country. Wending its way through the trees and rolling farm hills of Columbia County, WA, is the Patit (pronounced PAT-it, in this area) River, a gentle stream that burbles and flows merrily.
The diffused light of twilight sun slants across the fields, transforming the landscape into a magical vista of soft, pastel colors, set against the green of the trees. Light and shadows intermingle as evening prepares to turn into night.
This is the gloaming hour, the quiet hour, the time of tranquility and serenity and silence.
Every day, sunset reminds us that each day has a beginning and an end. We cannot tirelessly work every hour of the day, nor should we drive ourselves to the point that we flop into bed, exhausted, and grab a few hours before we arise to begin it all over again. We were not born to live an existence like this.
Sunrise, and sunset, are slow and leisurely, and while they are grand with colorful impact, they are not noisy, anxious, frenetic, or strident. One never says,
“I hate sunset. It’s so stressful.”
Rather one stops, breathes deeply, and looks at the sky and landscape surrounding.
“How peaceful this feels,” we say with a smile.
