Description
How very silent the wilderness is.
High in the Elkhorn Mountains of Northeast Oregon, USA, a cluster of conifers dots the green grass of a meadow. And while they all sort of kind of look alike – they’re all green, they’re all conifers – they are each one unique and distinctive.
Each tree has its own past and history, its own future. Some, overshadowed by a larger tree while they were yet saplings, are smaller than they ought to be, stunted. Others, set apart from the crowd and in a sheltered place, tapped into the water table and grew, tall and stately, straight and strong.
Together they stand, silent sentinels in a remote landscape. And on this morning – in late August, when one expects summer sunshine – they are dressed in a light dusting of snow.
The artwork, First Snow in the Elkhorn Mountains, invites us to step out of our tent this morning, shivering slightly as we zip up our coat, and stand in the midst of this tranquil, very very quiet place. The trees themselves inspire a sense of hush, their very stillness calling out to us to not speak but listen.
At our feet, a small stream flows ever so slowly by, but we can hear it – the veriest trickle of a murmur as the water ripples over rocks and past the grass and bushes growing along the banks. What is most amazing about this place is this: it does not need us to be beautiful, to be quiet, to be pristine and silent and serene and just the right amount of mysterious.
It does not need us to be what it is. But in some ways, to be fully what we have the potential to be – intelligent, contemplative, reflective, rational, compassionate human beings who seek a place of silence where we can deeply, deeply think – we need it.
(A delightful companion piece to First Snow in the Elkhorns is Blue Mist, also on this site.)
