Description
A flamboyant person is bold, striking, unusual – you know when he or she walks into the room. Think, Mae West.
And a flamboyant landscape is one that catches your eye, demands that you look at it, won’t let you forget its existence.
Think, Utah.
It is a place of mountains and canyons, arid deserts and lush meadows, lakes and cliffs and buttes and a big sky filled with clouds or crystal blue and clear. The air in the quiet places is crisp and clean, and when you find a path away from the crowds, far from the traffic, you want to spend time there, just being in the middle of it all.
The artwork, Flamboyant Utah, takes you there, in the middle of all the trees and bushes and foliage growing along the banks of the Fremont River at Capitol Reef National Park. It is autumn, and the leaves are transforming from rich green to blazing orange, the perfect complement beside the soft, whispery sage of the brush that grows so thickly, so insistently.
Indeed, so thick is the growth and undergrowth that it’s a bit difficult to pick your way through without a path, but thankfully, there is one. You stop to look, to listen. The soft sound of the river’s current is the perfect white noise – consistent, comforting, prompting your thoughts to flow at the rate of the water. In the background, the rugged cliffs stand sentinel, big and monolithic and timeless, catching both light and shadow in their rocky outcrops.
The aroma of the valley is elusive, yet tantalizing. This place – so hidden, so peaceful, so secretive and undiscovered (surely you must be the first person to have found it? But then, who made the path?) – that you are satisfied and calm, in the middle of all the flamboyance.
