Description
Getting away from noise takes a little work – time, thought, planning, the willingness to walk away from the crowds – but the results are worth it.
Here in Hop Valley, Utah, in the Southwest of USA, the major sound is that of the river gently flowing past, with the occasional buzz of an insect thrown in for harmony. It’s hard to believe that not that far away is the main campus of Zion National Park, where 4.5 million tourists flock each year, and where the major sounds are considerably more noticiceable, simply because there are so many people in one place.
But here . . . here few people discover. It definitely takes time, thought, planning and a willingness to walk to get here: the main trail wanders in and out of an isolated, often overlooked part of the park, crossing through private land which the hiker has permission to traverse. But just because one has permission doesn’t mean the journey will be easy: sometimes the trail follows the landowner’s road, other times it effaces itself to such a point that it’s easy to wonder if you’ve lost it.
By the time one reaches the point shown in the artwork, Gentle Flow in Zion, it’s almost easier just to follow the stream, which follows the path enough to ensure that one doesn’t lose the trail altogether. The distant hills are those that border the main, more populous section o Zion National Park, and if one hiked long enough, far enough, and steeply enough, one could meet up with a trail leading into that main section.
But, really, why?
It’s quiet here, peaceful, far from the madding and maddening crowds, surrounded by a beauty that doesn’t shout at you to look at it, but rather patiently waits for you to discover it.

The thick bold brushstrokes really bring this to life
Steve Henderson replied:
That is the fun and challenge of oil paint: making use of its plasticity, its sculptural qualities.

Diane Hocker
Exquisite piece with such meaning, especially for those of us who live far away from the Southwest.
Steve Henderson replied:
Happy that you got to experience some of the southwest beauty through this work, Diane. Thank you.
