Description
Gold surrounds us, but it isn’t metal. It is, rather, something far more precious, far more beautiful, a gift from God that belongs to all of us and not merely to the privileged and powerful.
The golden sunlight of summer bathes us with its glow and warmth, resulting in green growth all over the planet.
In the artwork, Golden Harvest, a little girl gathers a basket of this gold, this sunshine that has manifested itself in the golden petals of Black-Eyed Susans, a glorious flower that fills its space with abundance and joy. True to the nature of children, the girl reaches for the petals themselves, plucks them as a whole from their stem, and places them in her basket.
The small basket quickly overflows with bright, vibrant color, a treasure that she will take to her mother, present to her as a gift from herself and the garden. And the mother, with the wisdom of mothers, will find a way to display these blossom heads – not in a vase, since there are only a couple of flowers that will make it with their stems, but rather floating about in a pretty bowl filled with water.
For a transcendent, fleeting moment – a day or two, maybe more – the flowers will grace the home of the girl and her family, bringing the warmth of summer indoors. But because the Black-Eyed Susans are so plentiful, so abounding in their space, the little girl can go out again and again, gathering more flowers to give as a gift.
Golden flowers. Emerald green grass. Sapphire blue sky. Pearly white clouds. Nature gives us an abundance of gemstones that don’t need to be mined, hoarded in a safe, or restricted to the grasping hands of a few. Nature’s gifts are for all of us – to enjoy, to share, and be thankful for.
