Description
It’s amazing the different perspective we get, depending upon where we are standing.
When we are down in the gorge, by the river, we are surrounded by the hills of the canyon, embraced by their presence. It feels safe and intimate, but at the same time, the view is limited.
But atop, looking down, around, and over – the view is panoramic indeed. Below, the waters of the winding Grande Ronde River of Oregon, USA, are a blue ribbon, wending its way through the hills, and disappearing from sight around the bend.
As our eyes move up, we see the cliffs rise in the distance, grand and imposing, regal and silent.
Yes, this is a different view indeed from what we see down at the river’s banks.
The artwork, Grand Ronde River Gorge, invites us to climb the hillside, to stand at the top and look down while at the same time listening for the sound of the river. It is very quiet here in the wilderness; the road behind us is rough, primitive, untraveled except by those with a rugged vehicle, and even then, only by those who seek to escape to a place of remote, wild stillness.
This is a view of a kingdom – not one with the trappings of human vanity and insecurity, the splashy show of wealth, bright lights and gaudy décor. This kingdom is nature’s opulence – light and space, soft shadows tucked in the crevices, and silence – deep, abiding silence broken only by the sound of a bird, the softest splash of the current, the gentle whisper of wind.
In that silence, we can think. In this remote wilderness, we can breathe. In this high place, looking out over a timeless and abiding landscape, we find freedom.
No phone. No TV. No chattering heads. No politicians. No scolding. No fear mongering.
Just silence. Beauty. Peace. Calm. Serenity.
That is a kingdom, a real kingdom.
