Description
As anyone who lives in a desert well knows, you do not get lush green grass without a significant amount of rain.
“But rain is so grey and gloomy!” people exclaim. “I like sunshine!”
Sunshine is wonderful, that is true, but so, also, is rain. The combination of the two creates a landscape that is rich with growth – grass, wildflowers, bushes, trees –which, especially in the springtime, are lustrously green.
The artwork, Green Valley, takes us to a place of space and sky, meadows and fields, and – encircling the valley like benevolent sentinels – mountains rising up and up into the clouds. This is the Wallowa Valley in Oregon, USA, a place informally referred to as the Swiss Alps of North America.
Many times, in a mountain valley, the mountains themselves are close, so close that one cannot fully see and appreciate their beauty. But in the Wallowa Valley, there is much space, a sweeping expanse of landscape that allows all who live and visit there to see the full scope of form and shape and height and depth.
It is a unique combination of ranch land and wilderness, a place of barns and animal paddocks below and steep trails leading to remote lakes in the mountains above. Because the valley is high in altitude, spring has an added tempestuousness to her personality – her breezes are cold and sharp, but her sunshine, breaking through the rain clouds, is warm and golden, enticing in its beauty.
The entire feeling is that of peace and quiet delightfully interspersed with stormy overtones. In this place, we are not walled in, boxed up, hedged around, or limited. We have room to move, space to think, scope for the imagination to soar to the very heights of the clouds themselves.
What’s a little rain when you’ve got all that?
