Description
High in the hills with mountains in the distance, a country road wends its way through the fields. Life is quiet in the country.
Along roads like these – rarely traveled, and when people do drive on them, they can’t do so quickly – the hiker and bicyclist enjoy vistas of space that extends into the background hills. The only sound is that of the bicycle pedaling, a bird chirping now and then, the chirruping of insects that stops as the traveler gets too close.
Highland Road, the artwork, invites the viewer to step into this rural country landscape and experience the sound that silence makes. Stop and simply listen, and what seems at first to be unbroken silence possesses a music of peace and tranquility all its own: the breeze through the trees whispers lightly, so softly that you won’t hear it unless you consciously try.
In the distance, in the Blue Mountains of Eastern Washington and Oregon, a storm is brewing, and the grey/blue clouds warn the traveler that storms arise quickly and apparently from nowhere. The afternoon sun, broken by the clouds overhead, shines its golden light in a dappled pattern over the landscape, casting a fiery glow over the red bush in the foreground of the painting.
With a minimum of strong, bold brush strokes, the landscape emerges: the golden wheat fields, the trees, the road itself, and much is left to the viewer to fill in with his or her mind’s eye. The road itself – wending and winding through the fields – is its own story: where is it going? How long will it take to get there? Will we surprise a deer on the road, if we advance silently enough?
Enter into the world of Highland Road and escape the noise, the traffic, the hubbub, the tension and anxiety and stress of the “modern” urban world. Here, there is quiet and peace . . . and adventure.
