Description
There’s an old fence running through the landscape, remnants of a homestead long gone.
Who used to live here, at the base of these imposing hills, in a valley so rugged and harsh, and at the same time green, ripe for planting and cultivation?
At the Fruita Historic District of Capitol Reef National Park, Utah, considered to be the heart of the park, there is much history, signs and remnants of people who, for thousands of years, have called this verdant valley home. It is a place of great beauty, robust landscapes, majestic hills that overlook and tumble into the meadows below.
The old fence is a more recent sign of this habitation, determined to remain standing even as the homes and the barns and the outbuildings either fell to ruin or were torn down. But for some reason, the fence stayed, or was allowed to stay.
In the shadows, deer graze or rest, as deer always do. It is their landscape now, and they enjoy the freedom to wander through old orchards, around the fences, past buildings that once housed families, farmers, working people, orchardists.
The artwork, In the Shadows, invites you for a hike through this landscape. Take a stroll slowly through the old orchards, walk up to the fence and lean against it, look over across at the hills and marvel at their size, shape, texture, form.
As with any time that you hike through wilderness, if you are silent, if you do not shout or walk too heavily or loudly, you may surprise wildlife, like the deer. And you stop to simply watch them, amazed that they haven’t seen you yet, while you have somehow been able to stumble across the sight of them.
For this moment, you are together, sharing this valley and its timeless beauty, contentedly, and in peace.
