Description
Zion National Park in Utah is an incredible, beautiful place – not only for its rugged, majestic cliffs that surround the viewer in a strong embrace, but also for the colors of those rocks. They are red, pink, coral, orange – an exuberant explosion of color that contrasts against the green and yellow of the trees and bushes that arise from nowhere.
Last Light in Zion, the artwork, invites the viewer to join into the painting just above the Emerald Pools, a short walk on an easy trail up to several pools that cascade their water from one level to another. Because this is one of the easiest trails in Zion National Park, and because it is the one closest to the entrance, many people walk up and down here, and depending upon the time of day, it can seem quite crowded with families, strollers, hikers, and people of all ages and backgrounds.
But as with any place, there is the Quarter Mile Effect, or in the case of Zion, the 500 Steps Effect – if you are willing to walk just a bit beyond what most people do (on the beach, this tends to be a quarter mile from any entrance onto the sand), you will find fewer and fewer people milling about. Each subsequent step, each turning of the next corner, each willingness to walk just a bit more, takes the hiker to a place of more and more silence, more and more peace.
Last Light in Zion celebrates this place of peace just before the sun sets on a perfect afternoon – an afternoon that was warm enough when the sun was shining, but cools to the point of the hiker needing a jacket. At this point alone – because the day is getting late – the people drop off, and the visitor finds themselves in a place where they can hear the waters of the Emerald Pools gently trickling.
