Description
Many times, when we take a walk, we’re heading somewhere. Even if it is a walk for pleasure or exercise, we often set a goal: “I’m heading to the third major bend, where the large rock is. Then I’ll turn around.”
But when we take a walk on the beach, we generally forego these destination goals:
“I’m taking a walk. Along the beach. Next to the surf – better yet, I’ll take off my shoes and splash in the surf.”
The plan is to walk and walk – fast or slow, shod or barefoot – along the beach with the ocean to one side. And while there is still a level of exercise involved, the best thing about walking on the beach is just that: walking on the beach.
There are treasures buried in the sand, probably not gold and jewels, but definitely bits of shell, gleaming rocks (which don’t gleam as much when they’re dry), ribbons of kelp. Seagulls hop just far enough ahead to maintain a stately distance. Out in the waves, a seal bobs its head. And always there is the rhythmic, mesmerizing sound of the surf.
The sky is big overhead. The breeze blows gently. And when we turn to face the ocean, it fills our view of sight from one end to the other.
What a grand and glorious and wonderful place! Who wouldn’t want to just be in it? What matters a destination when we are standing in the destination itself?
The artwork, Lincoln City Beach, invites you to step out of wherever you are right now – the office, the kitchen, a parking lot – and enter the world of the beach. In the distance, people stroll along the calm, low tide water, but there is plenty of room for you. The beach is big and grand and open and expansive, and it invites you to spend time in it, just enjoying the experience.
(The beach in Lincoln City Beach is located on the Oregon Coast, USA. It is part of a seven-mile uninterrupted stretch of sand, tides permitting.)
