Description
How exciting it is to discover a hidden place!
Of course, as reasonable adults we know that there are few, if any, “undiscovered” places on this planet, and when we stumble across or into a secluded, quiet spot, we know intrinsically that others have been here before us, and more others will be there after we are gone.
But that does not take away the pleasure of happening upon a secret place, an enclave of tranquility that isn’t filled with cars and picnic benches and discarded beer bottles. Perhaps it is the child inside of us who exclaims with wonder at the discovery, and rather than shut the child up for being silly or unreasonable, why not exult in the moment?
The artwork, Lonesome Cove, invites us to step into this moment and stay for awhile, breathing the crisp, cool sea air, and maybe shivering a little – just a little – at the cool breeze that whistles by and through us. If we step in the right spot, closer to the rocks, the breeze disappears, and we are left with the sound of the surf swirling against the shore.
This is a small beach, tucked against the cliffs, easily missed unless we are hiking about. Driftwood lays in piles in the sand, and part of the adventure is picking our way through the debris – stepping over, around, atop, and then, like a child, giving a little leap and landing six inches below.
There’s a slight suspicion at the back of our minds that, if the tide is coming in, it will make its way more and more forward, pressing us backward against the rocks. There’s not a lot of space for the water to spread out.
But we are intelligent people, aware that the tide is something to be reckoned with on the coast, and we keep an eye on its movement. We can easily get out the way we have come in, but for now, it’s worth spending some time here.
After all, we’ve just discovered it.
