Description
Moonlight casts an aura of mystery and intrigue over the rocky shores of the Oregon Coast.
Silver and blue are the predominant colors in this night image at the ocean, while in the distance, the warm glow of light shines from the houses on the peninsula.
It is very, very silent. At low tide, the waters of the ocean are so far out that the sound of the surf itself is muffled. Not many beach walkers are out at night – though the moonlight beckons, the warmth of the houses’ interiors, coupled with their lack of cool, bracing breeze, keeps many people inside.
But not you. You are walking along the shore, wending your way from one rock to the next, mesmerized by how this same beach – which looks so very different in the daylight – is a place of almost magical fantasy.
Breaking through the clouds, the moon casts its glow as much in the sky as it does on the water, and from moment to moment the colors change, shift, darken into shadows.
Off in the distance a lone walker picks his or her way through the rocks – you have to stop and stare intently to see if you truly are seeing somebody. Though you are too far away to speak, there is a sense of companionship with this lone traveler on the same beach because both of you are willing to put on a jacket, wrap a hat around your ears, and take advantage of this time and place of silence and beauty.
So often, that’s the way it is – there is great beauty in this world, but many people never find or never see it because they are unwilling to come out of their warm living rooms (just for a moment!) and step into a place that is not warm and cozy and well lit. It’s not always comfortable – it’s frequently cold or breezy or dark – but it’s worth seeing, and being in, because it’s so different.

Thank you, Art. Few moments as mysterious as the light of a full moon on a land- or oceans cape.
