By magical, this does not mean spells and incantations, the chanting of three witches around a cauldron in Shakespeare’s Macbeth.
Nor does it mean what the movies call magical, a shallow world of make believe created by people who know nothing about the real world of everyday, much less the deep, the mystical, the amazing and enticing.
Rather, the magical resides in places of goodness and truth, purity and light, joy and love and the normalcy – real normalcy – of genuine people interacting with one another and the world around them. We find it more easily in nature than in “the world of men,” whose arena of politics and power, commerce and cunning, finance and finagling does not value goodness, beauty, and truth. If that is the world we accept as real, then it is no wonder that people feel dissatisfied, and quite rightly ache for something greater, deeper, richer.
The artwork, Magical Sanctuary, invites the viewer into a place of lush green growth. In the background, a cascade of water creates soft music. A young woman sits on a boulder overlooking the flowing water and allows herself to fall, almost somnolently, into a state of contemplation, daydreaming, imagination, thought, and gentle repose.
What could not happen in a place like this?
Far from the noise of propaganda, “news,” and social media posts, she explores this question, this concept of life and existence and meaning that transcends the pedestrian view we are told encapsulates reality. In this place of beauty and calm, she is able to deeply think and wonder, letting her thoughts flow with the current of the river, taking her to places where she is not scolded for questioning, seeking, desiring.
She is on the first steps to discovering the magical.
