Description
Deeply thinking is an intense activity.
Even though it looks like we’re “just sitting,” when we truly concentrate, when we set our minds to work through a problem or analyze a situation, our mental faculties are called to work as strongly as our body is when we demand it sprint across a field or pace itself for a marathon.
The artwork, Model Thinker, explores this concept of deep concentration. A young woman sits upon a chair, chin raised, eyes closed. Wrapped in a towel, she looks as if she has just emerged from the bath, or is ready to enter into one, but has stopped for this moment, arrested by a thought that she must explore, and explore now.
Her body is poised in a state between relaxation and tension – relaxed, because she is calm; tense because of the intensity of her thought process. There is no rush to this moment, and that’s important. To think, deeply think, we need time – to arrange our thoughts, to process the information we possess, to question that information, to explore the various facts and their implications and veracity.
Too many of us do not take this time. Some say it’s because they’re so busy – there are so many tasks, so much responsibility, endless demands. And this is true – our industrial corporate society keeps us busy, frenzied, occupied, often with tasks or thoughts that have little or no meaning other than to keep us in a state of feeling overwhelmed, helpless, without power.
Others, while they do not admit it, spend the time that they could be thinking sitting before a screen, eyes glazed, in a state of not only non-thought, but passive acceptance of what they hear and see.
In both extremes we are not thinking, and as humans, we were not designed to not think.
We were designed to create, wonder, question “authority,” analyze, be skeptical, explore, research, doubt, search, seek truth, innovate, imagine, and through this, make our world a better place.
And this all starts with thinking.
