Description
Every day, we go about our lives – or try to go about our lives – with a routine of some sort. We get up, we eat, we prepare for the day’s work. At the end of the day we (hopefully) rest from our labors, find a place of calm, think and bring ourselves into a position of peace.
It’s easy to forget that, throughout the world, it is the same for all life on the planet – animal as well as human.
In the wilderness, in the world of mammals and insects, birds and fish, these creatures, too, go about their day. They wake up, they find food, they run from predators (or, if it is their inclination, chase prey down), raise their young, rest from their work. So it is in the artwork, Mule Deer Draw.
A herd of deer runs lightly and lithely through the landscape. Are they being chased by something? Or did one startle and run, panicking the others into flight? Or are they simply running from one spot to the next, perhaps with a sense of play?
This is their day, their routine, their lives – and this day, this routine, these lives exist and go on whether we are there to watch them or not. While we are in traffic, muttering about delays because we’re running late, the mule deer of the wilderness are grazing, chewing their cud, picking their way through the brush, standing silent and alert, ears forward, listening for potential danger.
What a good thing, what a reassuring thing that life on this planet is not totally and completely wrapped around the world of mankind’s business, his commerce, her politics, their mass media, our submission to political correctness and appropriate group dynamics.
Nature is a reminder to us that the world is a big place – a much, much bigger place than what we recognize it to be. Nature inspires us to think, to think deeply, and seek for truths that are timeless and good.
“Get away from the four walls,” she calls. “Leave your phone behind. Look up at the sky and see how grand it is. Walk into the landscape and hear the silence.
“Live.”
(The landscape in Mule Deer Draw is located in rural Columbia County, between the Wolfe Fork and Touchet Rivers.)
