Description
Every day, we are generally on the way to someplace, whether that be work, shopping, the library, hopefully the local art gallery. We are in the car, walking across the parking lot, sometimes doing something extra fun like planning for a vacation.
But we are doing something, on the way to doing something, and that something is pleasantly delightful, dreadfully distressing (on the way to the tax preparer comes to mind), or something in between.
The young woman in the artwork, On the Way to Bath, is on her way to a situation that is most definitely pleasantly delightful and romantic. Gracefully, purposefully, with confidence and anticipation, she walks toward the iron clawfoot bath tub, tucked in an alcove enclosed by curtains, and filled with steaming hot, luxuriant water.
She is on her way to Bath, her own personal version of the city in the county of Somerset, England, known for its Roman built baths. For years, people have gone there to "take the waters," and those who have read the Regency romances of Georgette Heyer (if you have not please do so!) are familiar with the Pump Room and Almacks, places where young debutantes of the upper classes flutteringly looked for a catch on the marriage mart.
It is not dancing and socializing on this young woman's mind however. The romance she seeks is the luxuriant, warm water of that bath. She anticipates sinking into that water, giving a sigh of contentment, spending time that is timeless in a state and place of relaxation and comfort in the privacy of her home.
You can see it in her body language: anticipation, delight, happiness, joy. Svelte, athletic, fit and trim, she glides like a dancer, back arched and arms stretched out. Part of the luxury, for this woman, is the sheer joy of being alive, of being able to move easily and strongly, of the soft feel of fur between her toes as she walks over the rug.
She is on her way to a wonderful place indeed.
