Description
Sunset is never in a hurry.
If you have walked along a U.S. Pacific Coast beach during the gloaming hour – that period of time just after the sun officially sets and before night’s darkness enters in – then you know just how long the light can linger, how the clouds on the horizon change slowly from glowing pinks and oranges to deep, brooding purples and blues.
The sand along the coast changes correspondingly with the sky, especially when puddles act as mirrors to the palette overhead. This moment of afterglow, especially when the tide is out and the surf is resting, is a time of incredible peace and quiet, complemented with a sense of wonder and awe.
The artwork, Oregon Coast Afterglow, invites the viewer to step into this world of tranquility and beauty. Like the sunset itself, there is no sense of hurry, the only consideration being that in a very short while, the darkness will take over and engulf the landscape. But if there is a moon, or if no moon, stars twinkling in a clear sky, then there is enough light to see by, and one can continue one’s stroll down the beach.
This is a time to stop and look at sky, surf, and sand, all of which are changing their color and form before our eyes, as the golden glow of sunset segues into the shadows of night. In the quiet, in the peace, we look out to sea, past the rocks that stand as sentinels just off the shore, and our eyes reach, reach, reach as far out to sea as they can.
It’s difficult to identify the horizon line, that point when water meets sky, and the darker it gets the more blurred the line becomes. Soon we realize that we have been standing there, still and concentrated, thinking about things that have nothing to do with work, or world politics, or the auto repair bill, or any of the many thoughts that crowd and jostle through our heads throughout the day.
We have been watching the sunset. And sunsets are never in a hurry.
A complementary artwork to Oregon Coast Afterglow is Fire on Shore, also on this site.
