Description
Paradise means different things to different people, which is as it should be. Because we are all unique, different situations and things will appeal to us.
But something we can universally agree upon is that paradise is a pleasant place or state – there is no hunger or cold there, no fear or hate, no deceit or darkness, no caste or class system in which some people are “more important” than others, or “wise enough” to rule like kings. It is a place where we are truly free – untaxed, uncontrolled, not subject to intrusive surveillance, able to pursue goodness and creativity and joy.
The artwork, Paradise Found, invites us to take a leisurely stroll through a tropical, botanical garden on a day that is warm – perfectly so, and not too much so. For people who live northern climes, where the normality of winter includes ice, snow, and inclement weather, the tropical landscape is paradise indeed: there is abundant growth, a burst of color in a world of foliage that is plenteous, rich, and healthy. Flowers, fruit, and little frogs that tuck themselves behind the leaves – these all combine to create a place of beauty and wonder.
And it is paradise indeed to walk through such a landscape – slowly, leisurely, without having to rush off somewhere and “get something done.” The young woman in Paradise Found strolls gently on the winding paths of the Botanical Gardens in Medellin, Colombia, taking time to not only look, but to hear the sound of the birds, smell the perfume of the flowers, touch the leaves and feel the softness of some, the sharpness of others. It is a moment that she truly experiences, lives in with conscious fulfillment, with her mind and body working together because she is not thinking of being someplace other than where she actually is.
And where she is, is paradise.
