Description
It’s a sleepy day, a pastoral place, a quiet landscape.
And life is lived here. Nestled amongst the hills, set back from a hidden canyon, the home and barns and outbuildings of a farmstead are tucked away in an isolated section of eastern Washington.
Most of the time, people who don’t live in Washington state think, when they hear the name, “Oh, the capitol of the U.S.,” except that THAT place is on the other side of the country.
Or those more conversant with the Pacific Northwest think, “Oh, Seattle, where it rains all the time,” except that THAT place is on the other side of the state.
No, THIS place is generally rural, not intensely populated, sunny on more days than rainy ones, and filled with rolling hills and hidden canyons, wildflowers swaying in the meadows alongside fields cultivated with wheat, alfalfa, barley, peas and other crops.
Around about where the farmstead of the painting, Pataha Farmstead, is you may see cattle and sheep, sometimes goats, and when you’re driving past on the highway, a chicken, which probably should know better, might decide that it’s a good time to cross the road. Further down, a deer will be standing, indecisively, considering whether it should stay still or leap to the other side. If you keep going you’ll reach the little town of Starbuck, population 120 or so.
It’s a rugged landscape at the same time it is a gentle one, a wild, relatively unpeopled place that is also home to independent residents who want to live in an uncrowded environment, enjoying rural silence as much as they do the day to day sounds of countryside farm life. At night, you can see the stars.
The constant buzz and thrum of the city are absent; there aren’t a lot of sirens, loud traffic, blaring music.
But there is a lot of life being lived here.
