Description
What does it feel like to live in a remote – a really really remote – place?
Not just a small town 30 miles from a city, an easy drive to shopping, but a place isolated within its landscape. And the landscape itself is rough, rugged, and imposing – majestic in its size, populated with high mountain peaks, but not comfy and soft, gentle and easy to work with. You have to be tough to live here.
But, if you’re the type of person who doesn’t like noise and frenzy, traffic and bright lights and sirens, then a remote, really really remote, place is also a place of peace and thought, contemplation and introspection. Nowadays, however, such remoteness is a challenge, because TV and phone signals travel everywhere, and the noise and frenzy, traffic and bright lights and sirens, fear mongering news and intrusive advertising, push their way into our lives wherever we live, and we have to work hard to turn them off, hold them at a distance, reject them.
Enter into the world of Peruvian Landscape, the artwork. Set high in the Andes Mountains of the South American country, a green field overlooks a small, remote town, nestled in the valley below. Standing sentinel over all are the peaks of the Andes – imposing yet beautiful, timeless, powerful, and silent.
Looking over at them from the field, you could almost miss the town, so small does it seem in proportion to its surrounding mountain neighbors. And where you are, standing above the town, away from the bustle and sounds of even the smallest village, you hear only the sound of the wind.
What does it feel like to live in a remote – a really, really remote – place?
Maybe a little scary, if you’re used to the city. But then again, there is nothing to be afraid of in silence.
