Hearkening back to simpler days, a young woman listens to music on a vintage record player.

Technology is an amazing thing – not because we need more and more of it, but because, in every era and every age (all of which considered themselves “modern”), we have difficulty imagining a time or a place as advanced as where we are now.

In the artwork, Phonograph Days, the young woman exists in a vintage nostalgic era of the 1930s – her hat, her dress, her surroundings are from a time a place far away and long ago from now, but we as the viewer can join her as she does two timeless things: she delights in using the technology of her day, and she listens to and enjoys music.

Some things, technology aside, are timeless, and wise are we when we recognize this. Leisure time, a space for thinking, quiet reflection after a busy day – these are things that all humans need, and in our presently modern age of the 21st century, we are in danger of being so busy that we neglect to take the time we need to refresh our minds and spirit.

It’s not as if we don’t have the technology to find and listen to music: indeed, our options today are far greater than the options of the woman in Phonograph Days. What we lack is the willingness, or the mental “permission,” to step away from the busyness, to set aside time for “doing nothing,” and to do so without guilt, without self admonition, without mentally punishing ourselves for being lazy.

Life is not meant to be lived in a constant state of working, meeting deadlines, brainstorming, and production. Sometimes – far more often than we allow ourselves for – we need time to snap our fingers to the music, sway in time to the beat, and take time out to relax and refresh.
