Description
Sinuous and graceful, a young woman reposes in thought.
She is relaxed and poised, draping her athletic body elegantly as she leans into her arms. Her very posture expresses a sense of peace, quiet, and calm.
In such a state, totally absent from physical or mental tension, one is able to lean, as well, into their thoughts. Thinking, deep thinking, is intense, but oddly, that intensity does not reflect itself in our posture. People who are deeply thinking and concentrating upon something often seem very relaxed, eyes closed, all their energy concentrated in their minds.
They are in a state of repose.
“I sure don’t look like this when I repose,” some mutter.
Oh, how we have been trained in this society to compare ourselves – usually unfavorably – with others!
Before we even begin something – like settling into a state of repose so that we can think, deeply, deeply, about a matter, we tell ourselves we can’t do it because we don’t look like others when they do so.
A bit silly we are. And we miss out a lot because of it.
All of us are capable of repose. All of us are able to strike a pose – sitting or standing, leaning or reclining – in which we can let our limbs drape, our bodies relax, our eyes close, so that we can let our minds dance, or wander, or stroll, or dig, or focus, or daydream.
Along the banks of a river, sitting on the porch outside our house, lying in the grass looking up at the clouds, curled up on the sofa (with the TV off and the phone far away), we find our own place of repose, of calm, of peace.
And in that place, we are able to think.
