Description
It was one of those tumultuous days, one in which the weather looked like it was going to get better, then looked like it was going to get worse. To stay, safe in the harbor, or go out?
They opted to go out, risk it, take advantage of the brisk breeze. And throughout the day, they kept asking, “Should we go back? Should we go on?” And there was no answer booming forth from the sky, telling them what to do. There was only their own judgment, guided by experience, and they used that.
They sailed that day, that blustery, tempestuous, unpredictable day, and while there were many unnerving moments, many times when they questioned whether their decision to go out was the “right” one, there was also great learning, tremendous cooperation, a growing of confidence in their skills, their judgment, their experience.
By the time they returned to the harbor at the end of the day, the skies were still stormy, uncertain, capricious. But they themselves were different – they had taken a chance, gone out when they could have stayed home, refused to be ruled by fear. And by the time they returned to safe harbor, they felt that they had done something to earn that safety. Instead of cowering, giving up before they even started, they had grasped the wisdom that they held in their hands and met a challenge that they – through standing strong – discovered was not too great for them.
Safe Harbor, the artwork, is a reminder that life is not safe. There will not be a voice booming from the sky, giving out instructions, and the one that booms from our TV screen – telling us to stay home, stay safe, be afraid and listen to what we’re told – isn’t the one to obey.
It’s our judgment, guided by experience, deepened by intense questioning and a confidence in our intelligence and abilities, that speaks. When we’re wise, we listen to this voice.
