Description
There is something about the unexpected that delights.
It’s one of the reasons autumn is such a captivating season – tree leaves that have been green, the color we expect them to be, for many months, suddenly emerge in a blaze of orange and red, gold and coral. They shout out to us to stop whatever we’re doing and marvel at the new hues.
But not only trees change their raiment, altering our expectations of reality. On the ground, some bushes put on a show as well, and when there are enough of them, they transform the entire landscape.
Such is the situation with the artwork Seeing Red at the Seven Devils.
High in the mountains of Idaho, USA, in the Hells Canyon Wilderness, we come upon a meadow where the undergrowth, which we expect to be green or brown, is unanticipatedly, vibrantly, red. The result is the transformation of an “ordinary” wilderness scene (really, what is ever “ordinary” about the wilderness?) into something other worldly, surreal, magical.
Any time, in any place of nature, we discover potential for the unexpected, the unlooked-for, the unforeseen. There is so much diversity, so much life and variety, so much mystery to this world around us, that we simply can’t classify it to death. Like people, nature refuses to be boxed into the little tiny parameters we assign to it. She always bursts forth.
And when she does, we stand there, still in the silence, and take in the blue of sky, the deep green of conifers, the lavenders and purples of distant mountains, and that carpet of red, and our hearts smile at the sheer array of color, at the ingenious and innovative arrangement that nature is bold enough to put forth.
“Look at this!” she calls. “Isn’t it incredibly, astoundingly beautiful?”
Nature doesn’t follow trends. That’s why she’s worth listening to.
