Description
A high alpine lake in the Wallowa Mountains is still and quiet, a place of peace and tranquility.
Shades of Turquoise, the artwork, invites the viewer to step into the landscape and walk to the edge of the lake, where the reflection of sunlight turns the surface of the water a deep, deep turquoise.
It is similar to the color one sees in tropical waters, but located deep in the Wallowa Mountains of the Pacific Northwest’s Oregon State, this alpine lake is anything but warm and tropical. Here, should the hiker decide to pull off his or her shoes and dangle bare feet in the water, it is best done with a sweater around the shoulders, and not too much time spent in the water.
The lake’s water is clear, crisp, silent, and cold. Such is the hike to reach this lake that not many make it, and though there are other hikers and adventurers who have, the people who come up here like the silence and space, and keep out of one another’s way. At night, the twinkling of lights from various camp sites is the only evidence that others are here as well.
This is a place where, in the morning, one wants to bundle up in a coat, heat up some water for cocoa, and sit gently by the side of the lake and just look at the stillness of the water. Early in the morning, the shades of turquoise that one sees in the afternoon are a different color, and the lake’s surface, like a mirror, reflects the tones and hues of the sky above. From cobalt blue to cool steel to warm turquoise, the water’s surface color changes with the sun and the clouds.
Leave the world of noise and frenetic activity behind, grab that cup of cocoa or coffee, and sit by the banks of the alpine lake, enjoying the shades of turquoise.
