“Do you want to go on a picnic?”

The very question brings a smile of anticipation, with visions of a wicker picnic basket filled with grand, wonderful things to eat; a bottle of wine; and a cloth to spread upon the ground while the picnickers repose, gently conversing and looking about them at the tranquil landscape.

Shore Leave, the artwork, invites the viewer on just such a picnic, and more, as two small craft are moored to the rocky banks of a small island in a serene river. Nobody is in sight, but the boats themselves tell us that somebody is here, and because here is such a quiet, tranquil spot, we know that this is the perfect place to bring that picnic.

Set in the Columbia River Gorge between the states of Washington and Oregon in the USA’s Pacific Northwest, Shore Leave is nestled in a remote, out of the way spot between two major highways fronting the river. I am a fine art painter who creates representational images celebrating light, life, and color. A commercial illustrator for more than 20 years, I have been painting for most of my life, and in the last 18 years have focused exclusively on fine art. I celebrate images that invite the viewer to step into the artwork and experience a sense of joy, peace, freedom, encouragement, meditation, and thought. There's a lot of angry art out there, as well as a lot of shallow pop. I choose to use the abilities and experience I have to promote beauty and goodness.
