Description
We have a tendency, in modern society, to sit a lot.
In front of the computer. Behind the steering wheel. At the waiting room. Mesmerized, hypnotized, before the TV.
When we get up to move to the bathroom or refrigerator, we may find things a bit creaky – even those who are young and healthy and fit and athletic.
But regardless of our age and whether or not we are athletes or dancers, we all possess a most marvelous gift: a human body complete with beautiful face, amazing muscles, strong skeletal structure, tendons and joints and internal organs, and flesh that wraps all around to finesse the form and figure of a human being. We are a most stupendous achievement of creation.
The artwork, Smooth Moves, celebrates this fantastic and irreplaceable gift of God – our bodies. A young woman reaches high above her head in the most glorious, sinuous stretch. With all the grace and satisfaction of a cat, she exults in her fit, athletic form, her ability to move with confident carriage and a bearing that is regal.
Her back gently curves as she leans to the right. She is strong yet relaxed, staring abstractedly ahead in gentle thought. It looks like she is about to enter, or has just emerged from, the bath, her hair pulled up in an elegant bun.
“I don’t look like this,” we mutter.
Of course we don’t. We all look like who we are, and who we are is – like the woman in Smooth Moves – extraordinarily precious and unique. One way or another we move our arms and legs, we stretch, we stand, we balance, and, when we are alone – we dance, expressing the sheer joy of each and every breath, of the ability to be in and part of our physical surroundings, of living.
Move smoothly. It’s what we are designed to do.
