Description
Nothing lasts forever, and that includes winter.
Indeed, the seasons of the year are a reminder – a comforting reminder – to us that life is in a constant state of movement and change. There is uncertainty – as in whether we will be hit by a blizzard, a thunderstorm, a wildfire, a heat wave – but there is also the security of knowing that certain things, like seasons, are relatively predictable.
We can depend upon spring following winter. We know that the snow and cold and ice and bluster of the cold months are part of that season, and during that time we wear warm coats, put wood in the fire, drink hot cocoa and perfect our ability to make an excellent stew.
The artwork, Snow Retreat, invites us to take a walk on a late winter day. The sun is out, maybe not as strong as what we will experience in the summer, but strong enough to cast its warmth across the snow and call for it to begin its retreat.
Along the riverside, rocks that were hidden, not that long ago, in a blanket of snow, begin to emerge, warming themselves in the sun. The water itself is blue, deeply blue as it reflects the color of the sky. Today is not a grey day, but one that harbingers the soon-to-be coming colors of spring.
It is the beginning of winter’s retreat.
It is also a retreat for ourselves, an opportunity to leave behind the noise and anxiety and tension of what we call the world – the world of “news” and “entertainment” and politics and power and control, and just get out and away. It is a day for a winter walk, into a landscape that is silent because the snow, which is still abundant, hushes external sounds.
It is a golden moment to enjoy, in the fleeting time that it has left, the wonderland of winter, before we leap into spring.
Companion pieces to Snow Retreat are Winter Light and Winter Solitude, also on this site.
