The Grand Canyon in the Southwest's Arizona is a place of awe and wonder – one cannot stand at the rim before a great drop off and not feel a bit small, a bit silent, a bit still at the sheer majesty of rock and form and color before us.

In the artwork, Stillness, two Native American women stand in such silence. There is no need to speak, to observe aloud to each other how big everything is, to audibly wonder how such a natural beauty was formed and when. While there is nothing wrong with these questions and observations, Stillness reminds us that there is a time for just that – a profound time of quiet and silence in which we let the land before us speak, and we listen.

Stillness gives us the idea that these women have been to this spot before, and the sense of companionship between them is evident of their friendship, possibly sisterhood. Like all representational paintings that are created with thought and skill, Stillness invites the viewer to step into the image...

I am a fine art painter who creates representational images celebrating light, life, and color. A commercial illustrator for more than 20 years, I have been painting for most of my life, and in the last 18 years have focused exclusively on fine art. I celebrate images that invite the viewer to step into the artwork and experience a sense of joy, peace, freedom, encouragement, meditation, and thought. There's a lot of angry art out there, as well as a lot of shallow pop. I choose to use the abilities and experience I have to promote beauty and goodness.
